Welcome to GOV.UK Prototype recipes

2 min readApr 26, 2025

Over the passed few months I’ve tried to write up more articles to do with the GOV.UK prototype kit — I’ve over time written and delivered various internal training, however a lot of this is confined to slack or in person.

Having some place open, and sharable where I can put some longer form content seemed like the best way to be able to document and share some of the guides and examples of what can be done.

It seemed like a great excuse to try using Starlight from Astro.

The intent is to have a series of examples of plugins and recipes to help people develop their prototype skills and better understand how to utilise the functionality of the prototype kit.

Some of this will help with sharing code, building more robust, structured prototypes or helping add more utility to the kit.

Most of this is exploring what you can do with the prototype kit, not a recommendation of what you should do.

Standard prototype rules apply: do only what you need, to prove or disprove your hypothesis.

Next steps

I’ve already started writing drafts for a couple of things;

  1. A recipe for layouts — with the new GOV.UK branding coming this seems like a good opportunity to flex to explore some examples — you can see examples of the layout play examples on github.
  2. More plugin work — as examples — prototype demo components or prototype modals
  3. Build a long series — A lot of the work on layouts or data are the starting point of a longer tutorial of building out a more admin series.

As always, feedback is welcome via email or bluesky.
